Will Young at the Pink Pavillion, Ebbw Vale

14th April, 2010

Will Young, the most successful British male popstar of this millennium will perform in the Pink Pavilion on August 8, the night after the close of the Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod, as part of The Valleys Heart and Soul campaign.

Tickets go on general sale on Friday April 16 and demand for one of the UK's most popular performers is expected to be high. The concert is a collaboration between the Major Events Unit in the Welsh Assembly Government, this year's National Eisteddfod host authority, Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, the Valleys Heart and Soul campaign, and promoters P4 Music. The Heart and Soul campaign has already seen concerts by the Lostprophets and Only Men Aloud.

Will came to prominence in 2002, winning ITV's Pop Idol before embarking on a career that has brought two Brit Awards and delivered four Platinum albums and sales of over eight million albums worldwide, with numerous hit singles, including the fastest selling debut in UK chart history, the double A side Evergreen / Anything is Possible, along with Your Game, Light My Fire, Leave Right Now and You & I.

Will's talents are not confined to music, winning rave reviews for his film debut in Mrs. Henderson Presents, appearing on stage in a Noel Coward review, enjoying his own South Bank Show special, and featuring on the BBC Question Time panel.

Councillor Des Hillman, Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council, said: "People in Blaenau Gwent will give Will Young a fantastic reception when he gives a concert in the National Eisteddfod marquee at The Works this summer. The Council's Leisure Services team has worked with the National Eisteddfod and the Heads of the Valleys Programme to make this event a highlight of our 2010 cultural programme."

Britain's favourite choir Only Men Aloud will kick off the National Eisteddfod with the opening concert in the Pink Pavilion, Ebbw Vale on 31 July.

Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones, said: "One of the key aims of the Assembly Government's Major Events Strategy, now out to public consultation, is to develop innovation in the events industry in Wales.

"This initiative involving one of our most iconic signature events, the National Eisteddfod, and a Welsh promoter supported by the Assembly Government and local government is a perfect example of what can be achieved by working together. The Eisteddfod's temporary infrastructure essentially delivers a facility equivalent to the Cardiff International Arena that locates in a different part of Wales every year. This is about making smart additional use of that facility. I hope this venture is a huge success and will be a catalyst for innovation in the future."

Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Jocelyn Davies said: "This concert is a major coup for the area and will follow a fantastic week of cultural and musical activity from Wales' biggest festival, the National Eisteddfod. Both the Eisteddfod and Will Young's performance will help further raise the profile of Ebbw Vale and attract new audiences and visitors to The Valleys. The Valleys is brimming with events in 2010 for locals and visitors to enjoy. There's never been a better time to explore what The Valleys has to offer and to contribute to the regeneration of the area."

Britain's favourite choir Only Men Aloud will kick off the National Eisteddfod with the opening concert in The Works, Ebbw Vale on 31 July.

The Valleys - Heart and Soul of Wales is a three year campaign led by partnership organisations from the Western Valleys, Heads of the Valleys and The Valleys Partnership. The aim is to change perceptions of The Valleys, attract more tourists and bring long-term economic benefits to the area. The area has undergone major transformation with a total investment of £42 million and is now a flourishing tourism destination waiting to be explored.
